Strategic Internet Project Management
Project management comes into the picture when we take your strategic web plan and formulate a plan for its implementation. It may seem trite to say, but one of the keys to a successful Internet Commerce application is getting the work done. A typical project will involve software from several vendors, some custom development (or at least customization) by an in-house team or consultants such as us, the operational services of several organizations, the integration of the new application into existing business models and practices, and many other activities. Without effective project management, it is unlikely that all the pieces will come together for a successful system.

This is not the glamorous part of e-commerce, but it may well be the most important. Although projects will differ greatly in the details, there are some common issues for e-commerce projects.

Estimating Costs - what are the real costs of the project likely to be?

Measuring Benefits - What are the expected benefits from developing the e-commerce application? Is this project a strategic investment or one for immediate return?

Sizing and performance - It is especially hard to predict the required level of performance and sizes of the server systems for any Internet service, not just e-commerce systems.

Personal - Does the project have the necessary staff with the right skills to implement the application? Does it need consultants or contractors with specialized knowledge?

Maintenance, support and upgrades - What is the expected evolution of the e-commerce application? Are the software components on track with the expectations for the evolution?

Staying up to date - One of the truisms of technology is that it changes, and changes rapidly. In the Internet world, especially, the technology is evolving at an alarming rate. We want to stay up with the latest and greatest technologies, whether they be the Web, streaming audio and video, Java, Flash, JavaScript or exciting ideas yet to be invented.

In today’s global marketplace, complexity and speed are certainties. In such an environment, a good axiom for project management is, Do It, Do It Right, Do It Right Now. Creating clear direction, efficiency, timely response, and quality outcomes requires project managers who are agile -- adept at change.
